I am traveling on the 18:30 train from amsterdam to Koln. Reservation is optional! I would like to save the 4.5euro... will i have any problem. Is there any way to identify a non-reserved seat?

Hi.
On the direct ICE Amsterdam to Cologne train you have little digital signs above each seat where you see if a seat has a reservation and the route from where to where it is reserved.
And I hope you bought your rail pass via the railcc partner link to support the free information on railcc. Thank you! :)

on SOME very busy days these trains are so full that they ban all non-RES IR-etc passholders. Happens about 5-10 times each summer. Crying and weeping wont help you then.
There are hourly trains via another route with more changes-but for most thats too hard to even comprehend.
As there are also extensive works on the main junction town of Utrecht all summer, many trains are rerouted or retimed. This does NOT show up on bahn.de or the planners of this site, as NS has already enough trouble to even keep its own site uptodate. check a day or 2 before on ns.nl-tell them you do not need all those cookies.
