Hi!
We are trying to get from Wien, Austria to Porto, Portugal (we have InterRail pass). It seems it is extremely complicated to plan this route. So I have two questions:
1. What is the best route?
2. If we are going via French TGV or other trains, is it true that you need to make a reservation two months earlier (we have to leave in few days) and are there some alternative routes without this trouble with reservations?
3. Are there free boat routes? According to map it is possible to go to Livorno, Italy and then via boat to Barcelona.
Hope this is not too much questions. Thanks in advance!

Hi.
I hope you purchased your Interrail pass via the railcc partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] - otherwise you should ask at the company for help, where you got your Interrail pass from. railcc is not the support of other companies. Thank you! :)
Several options possible... one for example:
Vienna - Milan: by overnight train - https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/vienna-milan-en-235-480/94
Milan - Civitavecchia: possible by IC train - reservation recommended for EUR 3.
Civitavecchia - Barcelona: by ferry - it is not free, but you get a discount - https://rail.cc/en/interrail-ferry/civitavecchia-barcelona/22
Barcelona - Madrid: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/barcelona-to-madrid
Madrid - Porto: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/madrid-to-porto
Other option could be Vienna in direction of Switzerland, crossing the Alps - https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
And then Milan and go on by ferry.
Or along the coast via Ventimiglia - Nice - Perpignan ... to Barcelona.
Also possible is to cross France, down to Irun/Hendaye and on in direction of Portugal.
For reservations of TGV trains, have a look at this link [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation[/ux]

Thank you very much! Peter. Unfortunately we did not buy tickets via Rail dude, sorry, it was a misunderstanding. We thought it was an open forum ... :| :(
We appreciate your help! :)
Best

Of course it is an open forum . But we also have to earn our money to pay the servers, the free content and the pizzas we eat. :)
That's why I pointed to the railcc Interrail link. I think it is just fair to ask there for help and support, where you gave your money to. Anyway, just ask if you need more help. :)

Of course... I understand :) the thing is, we bought our tickets at Serbian rail station, and they cant help us, unfortunately the service is not working at all. Now we are in Vienna and we changed our original plan, to go country by country, due to some unexpected complications.
The only support we had by now are the rail planer apps/timetables. All routes they show go through Paris via TGV trains. So we are worried that without reservations (we tried to book seats online via link you provided, but site says there are no results and probably no free seats for pass holders) we will get stuck in France, late for the next train, and looking for place to sleep (and our budget is limited).
So we probably need an alternative route (ferries look expensive even with discount so now it seems that is not a good option for us.) We will try to make a timetable based on routes you provided. Maybe there is some app or site that generates timetables for some alternative routes?
Thank you for your advice, we are endlessly grateful!

Hi!
Well you can find links to routes without extra reservations (TGV) in the links Peter posted on the railcc website; or you use proper schedule planners where you can deselect TGV trains in the menu: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

If you have the time and you travel via Zurich to Milan, include this route - it's free with Interrail:
