Hi guys, we just bought our Interrail tickets here on railcc!
We are two guys that are planning a trip from Lisbon to Istanbul in 35 days during this summer.
Our itinerary includes both capitals and wild areas such as Normandy and Transilvania. Our first idea was to bring tents with us and wild camp around where possible, but a lot of people suggested that this might not be a good idea.
Our first plan was to get off the train on long routes, find a field where to camp, and leave the morning after. Is this a viable idea? Should we bring our tents with us or not?
:D

you can probably think
CAMPIng is mostly even only permitted in official campins-and these are rare, very rare close by big stations. Fast trains do not stop at minor halts. And in some countries even very rare. In west-eur many campings will not take noisy, drunken, ill-behaved (thats what they mostly think) youth.
You will have to carry all that stuff all the time on/off trains and into the camps-or use a big locker=cost more, if stopping somewhere.
I myself am not a fan of sleeping between ants etc-hoStelbeds do not cost that much more are all the cost in campings, but this really differs from country to country.
But the owners of this site seem to like it-maybe they give the counterview to mine

I think the only problem is to carry all the things for camping. You can safe a lot of luggage, when you don't do. But maybe you will miss real cool experiences. ;) There are a lot of really cool places to camp - if wild oder not - where you can't easyliy get a hostel oder sth. For example - Isla de Ons, Dune de Pyla, Cote Bleue and so on.
I think it depends on waht you want. If you want to do a lot of nature things and maybe some hiking in the pyrenees, alps or whereever - you should do it. And if you go in summer you might not need a tent, maybe just a tarp is good enough.

I haven't been your route so I can't speak for the areas you are going, but my experience with camping was fantastic.
Save luggage space by taking a hammock. You can get a decent one for less than £40. Man, they are so comfy. A tent, sleeping bag and roll matts are bulky! If you're going in summer it is usually warm enough. A tarp sheet and mosquito net are lightweight too if you need them.
I stayed in France, Northern Italy and Croatia. I took trains to cities and then using maps took a frequent, regional train a couple of stops out until it looked suitable. You can take the train back quickly in the morning and still get to experience cities. Some of my best experiences were finding cool spots to camp. We stayed in the zoo area of Parc de la Tete in Lyon by accident. Nobody said a thing even though we woke up with lemurs and giraffes less than 20 metres from us. In quite a lot of countries wild camping is permitted and people are pretty cool with it as long as you tidy up after yourself.
And if you need a break to shower and wash your clothes you just get a room for one night. Over almost a month it does save you money to spend on other things.
