Peter, you're a star. Roughly what size bag are we looking at?
Also, how comfortable is it ? :)
And....when you book your ticket, can the date on it be flexible at all ?
Peter

1) size... a medium 80 litres suitcase or bag pack ... if you have a monster one, it also will fit in the compartment, but with less space for the others - this won't be a problem during the night.
2) it is comfortable - I can recommend it. :) it always depend on how much you want to pay. in a 2 person compartment you are more comfortable. but for a 6 person, it is okay!
3) no ... you are no flexible. if you book a bed in a night train, you are fixed on the date and time. but it is the same for a seat in a day train. the only thing is that you can get refunded the reservation (as much as I know - but no guarantee on this answer) - but with a fee of EUR 15. ||

Just to confirm, the €3,50 seats are comfortable enough to sleep in ?
And the cost is independent of the distance you intend to travel ?
Peter

me personally, I can sleep in such seats. I use my iPod and I will sleep - of course there is more noise than in a closed 2 bed compartment, but that's normal.
and the 3,50 is independent of the distance !! :)

Hi Peter!
Can i buy the supplement in a station or somewhere by person. I mean, I wont be too much days in any city, so im not sure if i could wait for the delivery service.
If i go to the station a few hours before the train leaves, will be able to buy the supplement there?
Thank you!

hi Lucina ...
no problem to buy the ticket some hours before train departure. But sometimes the train can be full ... especially night trains in summer are often full. But often you get at least a seat... if this is no problem for you, then do it your way!! :)
and as well you are not to much fixed on dates and times and more flexible and free ! :)

ok...thank you.
i will travel in winter, so i hope that the trains wont be full.
i´ll buy the supplements when i arrive to the city, but sometimes, i´ll be there for just a few hours.

in winter you normally get a seat/bed even hours before train departure. often you can even just enter the train and ask the staff for a bed/seat - which is sometimes a bit more expensive - but in an emergency okay. :)
just avoid Friday and Sunday nights... there the night trains might be fuller :)

There's no direct night train from Berlin to Kopenhagen, you have to change in Malmö: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/berlin-malmoe-en-300/58
There's one direct ICE via Hamburg, leaving Berlin at 1526 (leaving from Gesundbrunnen at 1544 from June 20 till July 3).

When I read the Interrail website, I understand one must live in an European country to take advantage of the low IR fares. Is this correct? Through this forum I understood the cost of a T2 -Economy was 50E per person, however several websites indicate the cost for 2 people in a T2 travelling from Munich to Florence on the CNL is well over 100 E per person. Is the 50E quote for people living in Europe? Will we pay a higher price coming from Canada?
Is a quote of 119-135Euro for 2 people in a T2 Economy sleeper the average price? If not what is the best way to access a lower fare.
I apologise for asking this questions again but I'm using my age and inexperience with train travel as my excuse. LOL I am sincerely grateful for your patience and would really appreciate your feedback.

hi ...
the supplements mentioned above are only for persons travelling with an InterRail ticket - prices are per person.
if you want to get these discounted supplements, think about an EURAIL ticket which is nearly the same like InterRail - only for Non-Europeans - have a search on Google for it.
if you want to travel without a railpass, you can buy single train tickets which will be about 150 EUR per person in a T2 (double bed cabin) including everything ...
I hope this will help you and do not hesitate to ask if you have some problems - even this website is only for InterRailers. :)

... and just to mention: sometimes the night trains (book early in advance) offer special fares (but very limited) on every destination ... EUR 39 for a seat or 89 EUR for a bed in a T2 and so on... :)
you can also book them via the link mentioned above.

Hello Peter,
Thanks for the infor. on how to make reservation or buy supplement on CNL. I just tried it and it works, but I am just wondering...after I've done all you've mentioned on the DB Bahn website, it said these tickets can only be mailed, no online ticket available for night train. Then the question is will they ship overseas like to China? I couldn't find the ans. in the website so I decided to write to you. We are leaving on July 19th, am afraid that if I order it today, I don't have enough time to wait for the tickets to arrive. What do you suggest? Or do you know if I can just print it out...etc?
Thanks in advance again.

hi ...
as much as I know it is not possible to print them ... at least the ones for InterRail travelers.
I am not sure about delivery times - maybe just ask them directly.

Hi,
I was wondering if someone (Peter it seems!) could help me, I plan to take a night train from Berlin to Krakow next Monday 20th July and I've searched for info about it, I can see that there is a train departing Berlin Licht. at 21.04pm on Monday night and it arrives in Krakow Glowny at 9.18am but it doesn't say CNL next to it and I can't seem to get any further than viewing the travel info, ie: I can't seem to book it.
Do you know if this is a very busy train that would require an advanced booking? Also, do you know where I would find out the how much it would cost extra as I have global inter rail pass and I'm finding it hard to get prices!
Thanks!
Peter

hi ...
check this link for details: https://rail.cc/en/berlin-krakow-gdansk-night-train/f1407
you can't book this train online, try it before at a station somewhere in Germany before you arrive in Berlin if possible. but I think on a Monday evening, you should get a couchette ... when booking 2 days in advance.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for supplying this Q+A service!
I wanted to book a night train from Amsterdam to Copenhagen/Kobenhavn, and tried to do so on the Deutsch Bahn website you provided a link for in your instructions. Problem is, I can't seem to find the button which says Book only extra charge which you specified in your instructions... has the website changed? :|
Also I am 25 at present, but will turn 26 whilst my InterRail pass is active - am I right in thinking that this is OK for me to buy a youth pass? Will it affect any supplements for night trains etc?
Sorry for all the Qs...
Thank you in advance,
Sam :)

You cant book online at the moment you have to book at main european stations.

to add: it seems to be not possible to book the CNL night train online, when both DEPARTURE and DESTINATION are NOT in GERMANY. one of these two stations has to be in Germany. :(
and YES you can buy a YOUTH ticket and have your 26th birthday during the tour - no problem. the date of departure is the important thing concerning your age.

Hello,
I've been trying to book a CityNightLine train ticket from Berlin to Paris on one of the first days of January (1st, 2nd, 3rd, to return home after New Year's Eve in Berlin), but it's impossible to book them on the French SNCF website (always a nightmare...), and Deutsche Bahn website says prices for couchettes are more than 300€ each! That seems absolutely crazy, especially since they always advertise the 89€ fare and then say it's not available.
Peter, you said it was possible to book a ticket at the last minute, do you think there's a chance I will find two tickets in Berlin for couchettes in the CNL to Paris at the beginning of January? Is it usually a very busy period? How much would that cost if I don't have a InterRail pass? And what pass should I buy to get a significant discount on this route (I don't really understand the InterRail system: do I just need a Germany pass?)
Many thanks for your help, I've been trying to find answers by calling DB and SNCF but nobody seems able to find a solution for me!

Hi ...
This is definitely peak time ... one of the peakest times for rail travel ...
My experience: no chance to get a bed or seat. It is too late now.
If your country of residence is France (I suppose this is the case), InterRail isn't worth to buy. As you will have to pay for you travels in France - the rule of the country of residence.
I send you a link where you can try to get the last special offers... between the 1st and the 3rd I found right now tickets per person Berlin-Paris by ICE and TGV starting from 119,- to 159,- EUR per person on day trains - but they are 1st class. 2nd class is full.
Order the tickets online and get is sent to France (EUR 3,50).

Many thanks, Peter. Geez, these trains get full pretty quickly, I'll know it for next time.
I'll use the link you sent me - otherwise I'm afraid I'll be stuck in Berlin forever (which does not sound like such a bad idea actually...)
Cheers!

Hello Peter,
we got the Interrail tickets, and we're traveling in november.
We booked all accomodations, and now we are trying to make sure about trains, prices etc.
Can you, please, tell us:
We are planning to travel with City Night line Munich - Amsterdam. Do we have to reserve our seats, pay something over our IR ticket? I read that basic seats (the least expensive ones) should be payed 4 euros, which is ok, but we want to be sure about that.
Can you tell me one more thing:
Can you tell me about those lockers on train stations - what's price of keeping our luggage for few hours? I never used that, and we have 4 hours in Munich, so we would like not to drag our bags through city.
Thanks in advance,
Regards!

Hi.
The night train Munich-Amsterdam is EUR 4 in a seat.
But think about a 6-bed-couchette. Much better if you are bit more relaxed in the morning. But for you to decide. :)
Details are here: https://rail.cc/en/train/munich-to-amsterdam
You can book this seat or bed in advance: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/munich-amsterdam-cnl-418/12
Should be also possible to buy in Belgrade main station (are you from Belgrade - because of your name).
Lockers in Munich are ~ EUR 4 for 24 hours. You can't get them for only 4 hours.
That's what I know.
Other options if you want to avoid the night train...

Well, I don't want to avoid night train, i wanted to avoid paying for accomodation and kill one day off, but now i see that price is about same :)
Hm, about lockers - (just in case) - I can pay for 24h, but I can take bags after few hours, right? :)

Hi!
Yeah, you pay for 24 hours maxium usage time - you take your luggage out after a few hours too, but if you then want to close it again, you will have to pay another time.
