Hey dudes!

Since Montenegro is on our trip, for which we will leave coming thursday, I'd like to ask you experienced guys what to do! We will go by train from Belgrado to Bar, and then we are planning to stay in Montenegro for 3 days. Afterwards we will go to Bari, by ferry.

Now my question is: Is it nicer to stay in Bar, or are there more fun places (thinking of Kotor), where we could go? We're taking tents with us, so campings should do!

Love to hear from you.

Hi!

I spent some days in Montenegro last year with a bunch of friends and we have stayed at Zabljak in Durmitor national park and Kotor, of course.
Kotor should be your first destination - it might be better to get off the train in Podgrica already and take a bus from there to Kotor. We stayed in a appartment which was not really expensive, maybe about 20€ per person/night in the middle of the old town. Initially we wanted to take a tent with us as well but I have been looking a bit for campsites and did not really find good spots/campsites with good reviews so we went without a tent.
Zabljak/Durmitor national park is great as well, but if you just want to stay three days this might be just too much. We stayed in a hut (without heating or insulation) for just 5€ per person/night which was really great. :)

Thanks so much, Flow! Currently writing from Prague ;)
Dormitor sounds like a great place, and that picture! We might even stay longer, in order to visit both Kotor and Dormitor. But whats the best way to get to Dormitor? We take the day train from Belgrade to Bar. Should we get off first and go to Durmitor? Or go to Kotor first and travel to Dormitor a few days later? Your help is very useful! Thanks a lot.

We took the night train from Budapest to Bar and got off the train at Podgorica (you could get off at Kolasin already to take a bus from there but would miss out on the stunning train ride down to Podgorica (pics below).
From Podgorica we (group of 4) took a taxi to Zabljak, the town in the centre of Durmitor national park which cost us about 50-60€, which is not really much more than the bus would have cost. There were loads of taxi drivers waiting upon the arrival of the train in Podgorica, try to negotiate the price a bit. ;)
Or, you can take a bus but you have to check timings locally (bus station is in front of train station). An alternative, if you would want to maximise train travel, would be to take the train from Podgorica to Niksic and continue by bus/taxi from there.

In Zabljak, there is a number of campsites about 30-45 min walk away where you could also rent a hut as we did. Supermarket and restaurant can be found in Zabljak downtown.

From Zabljak there is at least one daily bus to Kotor via Niksic, I have to look for the ticket but it was probably about 12€ or so. Great views when you enter the bay of Kotor.. :)

...oh, and it is better to travel to Zabljak/Durmitor first. In Zabljak, you could also look for Tara Canyon... :)
