In a short time I will go from the Netherlands, over Germany and Denmark, to Sweden.
I have tried to book it as cheap as possible, so here it gets a bit complex. Please read carefully before quick response!
I have chosen to use a 5-in-10 day Interrail all-country pass.
Usually, if you step into a direct night train in the evening, you can set the travel date on your Interrail to the following day. That spares you a day! But... nope, this is not allowed to be the 1st day of your journey.
In my case, it happens to be that first day of my journey.
I travel from the Netherlands to Dortmund, where my nighttrain departs at 23:56.
That's 4 minutes on my first travel day :(( I won't offer an Interrail travel-day up for 4 minutes! :P
So I discovered that the first stop of the nighttrain is Hamm, at 00:14. There's no earlier stop.
Now I just want to buy a ticket that makes me pay for the first 18 minutes of my nighttrain trip.
How do I do that?
I tried to book a Nightliner-ticket from Dortmund to Hamm, but the DB site won't let me. Or at least: not via internet.
* Can I try it at a German ticket-vending machine? We have one at our station in Enschede (NL).
* Should I call Deutsche Bahn and explain it? My German is ok, but this is quite a thing to explain...
The seat reservation from Dortmund to Copenhagen is already in the pocket.
All I want is just to pay for those 18 minutes, on a night train. Please help!

I would appreciate it if you would respond a little less like a 'know it all', thank you. I leave it to you to translate your answer to English.
You ask me which ticket I have bought to travel to Dortmund. It's a dated RB-ticket from Enschede to Dortmund.
I did not book a ticket straight to Hamm, because every option lead me from Enschede, over Hengelo to Hamm. It's a detour and it would make me pay more.
What a friend suggested me yesterday, was to take a SchönesTages-ticket. That would have allowed me to travel the day until 3AM next day... but only on RegionalBahnen. That won't work, because the small part in the Nightliner is not a RegionalBahn, and they'll get me after all. It would help me to get to Hamm on a RB, though.
Next, you suggest something like I could have used my first day to travel on... but to say it again, that won't work. Again, you talk about it like you know it all - please drop that awful attitude.
Here's an explanation of the rule in English: http://railcc.interrail.eu/help/using-pass/how-does-7-pm-rule-work
If it would have worked, I should have ordered my Interrail to get valid on the 19th, and use it first the 20th. Looking at the weekdays, the tenth day after the 19th is the 28th, on a saturday. I want to make my holiday as long as possible, so I want it to end on the 29th. Therefore it can only be valid from the 20th on.
To make sure, I checked this with Interrail before I ordered my ticket, and they said the same.
One thing I liked about your post, is that you assume that a RB-ticket from Dortmund to Hamm will only cost me 5-6 euros. That's less than the 11-14 euro I got from the Fahrplanauskunft. Let's hope you're right on that.
I don't mind waiting at Hamm. I did so last year, and as my platform changed a few times that morning, I was so lucky to see almost every corner of the station hall. I will consider waiting there and hop on the train at 00:14.

Hi Stylite.
Don't worry about the sound nltrainer writes - it's always like that, so don't take it personal. :)
I suppose you bought your Interrail pass at the interrail.eu website?
If so, please ask there for support and help, as we are NOT the support of this website.
Here is the 1900h-rule for night trains on railcc: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
Here is the partner link for official Interrail passes via railcc: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
If you are fair and support all the free information on railcc, the help in the forum with your rail pass purchase via railcc, we are also happy to help you finding the cheapest option to travel, like we do in other forum posts. :)

Hi Peter,
Very polite of you to apologise on behalf of one of your users! But you really shouldn't have to.
I didn't take it personal. I've been around on forums for years, and for a long time on Tweakers.net, a Dutch tech forum . There, everyone is discouraged to behave as a 'know it all' from the start, which creates a great atmosphere there. I just get a bit disappointed when I see a reaction from someone who clearly hasn't learned that lesson. :)

Hi!
...you should get your desired ticket at a ticket machine in Germany or at a ticket desk. You will need ticket of Produktklasse IC/EC (or B) for the night train from Dortmund to Hamm, at the ticket machine choose Alle ohne ICE.
Here is a tour: http://www.bahn.de/p/view/service/vertriebswege/automat/ntaw.shtml
Select Dortmund to Hamm and then Direkt zur Fahrkarte - that way you get a ticket that is not issued for a certain train but can be used for any train of the chosen category (Alle ohne ICE is valid for IC/EC/CNL trains).
