its possible, but its far better to shell out 6 eur for 1 TGV=seat REServation in FR. Go Via Switzerland, local train till border-Domodossola (most treni not from that giant cathedral Centrale=panick again for using the metro)

I have another question (hopefully easier to answer ;) ) : is a 5min transfer time too short? I know that for big train stations is short but what about smaller ones?

Depends on the station. But if the connection is shown in a schedule planer, you can do it: [u]https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route[/u]
But you can never preview delays. :)
