I am planning to travel from Nice to Rome overnight, if possible on a night train that offers couchettes. Is this route possible, and if so, what would the route be and from where could I buy any relevant seat reservations?

Hi!

The direct night train has been withdrawn quite a few years ago, you could now only take this night train from Genoa: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/turin-salerno-icn-799/252
If you want to sleep longer you might think about travelling to Torino first and then take this night train: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/turin-salerno-icn-797/194

Reservations can be made at train stations, for instance in Nice or online as explained in the links above.

Please support our work and free information by purchasing your Interrail ticket via our railcc partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Thanks for your help.

If on the SCNF website there is no search results for that date and time, could that mean that the train is fully booked?

The other journey I am planning in Venice to Ljubljana, during the day. I know it is possible to go via Trieste/ Sezana, would you recommend this route?

What are you looking for on the SNCF website (apart from buying the IR ticket of course)? ;)

If you just want to look for schedules in general, have a look at the recommended schedule planners here: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

And never hesitate to ask if something is unclear - schedules can be a bit tricky. For instance, one reason you did not find anything could be that you have been searching for a date after 15 June: on that date schedules throughout most of Europe are amended and especially Italian Railways are always lazy to update the information in the online timetables.

Venice to Ljubljana: Have a look at the option via Nova Gorica/Gorizia as well: https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/
You can go via Sezana - Trieste as well, I did this in 2011. However, due to massive damages to the catenary caused by freezing rain on the line from Ljubljana to Sezana there are currently buses operating since the line only has limited capacity which is needed for freight trains mostly. This is the current timetable with yellow meaning bus instead of train: http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/uploads/vozni-red-po-relacijah-2014/Zacasni_VR_Ljubljana_Sezana_23_04.pdf
I would recommend to go via Jesenice - Nova Gorica like this: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/ljubljana-to-venice
If you want, you can stay a bit in the old town of Gorizia for a coffee and take a later train to Venezia.

Once again, thanks for your help.

So if I was to take this Route, Venice - Gorizia then Nova Gorica to Lake Bled, would this route require any reservations?

Do trains in Slovenia in general require a reservations?

Also, would you suggest waiting until June 15 then booking reservations for trains (especially night trains) then?

No, you would not need any reservation for this route. List with trains that require a reservation: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

You need a reservation for travel on ICS trains in Slovenia that run on the route Koper - Ljubljana - Maribor (of course there are other trains without compulsory reservation on that route as well: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/intercityslovenija/151
Apart from these there are no trains in Slovenia with compulsory reservation (only for the night trains to Austria/Germany/Switzerland you would need a reservation for overnight travel)

You dont have to wait until 15 June to make reservations.
