Hi Everyone,
Other posts have touched upon this subject but not fully delved into it.
The problem is: My Girlfriend and I will have stayed the night in Zagreb and wanted to leave in the late afternoon (5/6ish) after we had seen the city. We wanted to leave Zagreb and get to Pula in the evening (as the train time map said it was a 3 hour train) as we are staying there for 2 nights.
However
After looking at the timetabled departures from Zagreb to Pula it appears that there is only one per day and that leaves at 21:20 and gets to Pula at 10:44 the next day! which is really not briliant as we will miss a night in a hostel and miss an evening as well.
Does anyone know if there are any other trains available?
We were thinking of getting a coach from Zagreb to Pula but that will be our last resort. I have checked trains from Rijeka and they seem to just join up with the 21:20 train. So overall not great at the moment.

Which map are you referring to?
This are connections Zagreb - Rijeka and Rijeka - Pula:

As you can see, connections in Rijeka are not great and overall it takes much longer to get to Pula. From Rijeka to Lupoglav you would have to go by bus since there is no rail connection (the bus is operated by Croatian Railways HZ and included in InterRail).
Where did you find the overnight connection? This would only be an option during the summer and would require a lenghty overnight stop in Ljubljana - the connection would look like this:
