Hey guys :)

So we've decided on the above route for 12 days (1st july - 12th july) and were just wondering if it's worth buying an interrail pass or not?

Also, is it worth booking hostels in advance or would it be easier to find them as we arrive in each city?

If anyones travelled a similar route and would like to share some of their experience/if these cities are worth spending 4 days each in, that'd be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi!

An InterRail pass makes no sense if you only have to cover two single trips.
Go with regular tickets bought directly at the station instead.

Have a look at this blog post where the route is described: https://rail.cc/blog/bucharest-sofia-istanbul-train/

I'd definitely add some other places to your trip, maybe think about Novi Sad in Serbia, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria; if you want to go to the beaches, either head for Montenegro from Belgrade or for Burgas or Varna on the Black Sea from Sofia.

Ah sweet. Cheers for the advice!

Now I'm considering stopping over at Zagreb for one day after Budapest, and then heading town towards the Istrian peninsula for 2 days before continuing back to Belgrade.

So Buda - Zagreb - Istria - Belgrade - Sofia in 12 days

Does that sound more reasonable?

Humm...well, Istria is quite a bit off route and the rail connections are sparse. There will be a summer only twice weekly night train Budapest - Koper with connection to Pula plus the regular day trains in Istria which have bus connection from Rijeka. To get to Belgrade by train you would have to travel the same way back again via Zagreb.
You might instead head for Split and the Dalmatian Coast...taking a bus to Montenegro, then train again to Belgrade - Sofia...

That's really great advice, cheers!

And you'd say that 12 days is enough to experience all the places in this list (with your Split/Dalmation coast suggestion)? (Sorry for all the questions, that's the last one i promise :P )
