Just curious about what sizes people have taken with them for 3 week inter railing? I was thinking about taking a 45 litre bag?

Hi!

45 litres should be sufficient - I only have a 65 litres bag which I take with me for trips from 1-5 weeks and on shorter trips I regularly think that 65l is too much. Especially if you are going during the summer where there is no real need to take much warm clothing/shoes with you and if you are not intending to camp, thus not needing sleeping bag, mattress etc..., I see no problem with a 45l bag.
Anyway, I would recommend taking an additional daybag of any sorts with you to use for sightseeing trips.

Do you recommend to pack the additional daypack in the big bagpack? Or do you carry both on your back and front when you walk from the trainstation to the hostel?

Best regards

Back in the day I had my regular backpack plus a messenger bag which I could store in the backpack when not needed, however since I am carrying a big camera I started to use a Lowepro photo backpack first, carrying it in front when also carrying the large backpack...last year I changed to a messenger-style photobag so I am usually walking with my large backpack plus the photo bag over one shoulder...
