We are planning our first interrail route and having troubles with the connections.
We noticed that there is no train connections in:
- route Split-Dubrovnik-Bar, only busses, (except the last route on Podgorica-Bar.)
- Belgrad-Sarajevo

From Bar to Belgrad there is a night-train, which costs extra.
There is also said that the connection from Sarajevo-Budapest has been suspended.

So we are feeling quite hopeless, either we would have to change completely our route, or consider if its worthwhile to buy interrail tickets. These are the places that we would really like to see. Our route is planned to be no more than 15 days.

Any advices?

Hi Lauraaaa.
In deed, in this area some railway connections are missing or are cut down.
You already found the bus connections we provide as well for the parts train connections are missing: https://rail.cc/en
If you want to travel in this order, think about:
Split - Dubrovnik and Montenegro by buses: it is the common way of travel in this are to travel this way. Tickets available at the bus stations. The fares of the buses are inexpensive (see links above for the main routes like Split-Dubrovnik and Dubrovnik-Podgorica/Bar).
From Montenegro (Bar) to Belgrade by day (!) train, as it is an amazing scenic route: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/bar-belgrade-b-432/146
Also not expensive by point to point tickets.
As you want to end up in Budapest, you could now travel by bus from Belgrade to Sarajevo, with a trip to Mostar. And from Sarajevo to Zagreb again by train. Followed by an other trip also by train from Zagreb to Budapest.
Of course it is possible to include as well Sarajevo and Mostar in the beginning of your route as not too far away from Split.
An Interrail pass won't pay off - better to use point to point tickets.
Peter :)

Hi!

I'd probably take the bus from Split to Mostar, then train (scenic route!) to Sarajevo, bus to Dubrovnik - Montenegro, then by day train to Belgrade and day train again to Budapest.
Buy all tickets on the spot; train Bar/Podgorica - Belgrade about 23€, Belgrade - Budapest 15€; buses about 20€ for each trip in average.
