there are many difference-and without knowing your plans, hard to tell what is ''best''
RENFE is for a certain nr of TRIPs-on long-distance trains (you can get the usual free connecting cercanias at both ends), but its easy to use-its not even paper, its all electronic, and ditto for making the actual bookings. It is thus not really what people mention ''pass''.
IR (1 country) is for a nr of DAYS in 1 month- for as many trains you an manage in that day-if really wanted. BUT you must go to the desk every time to make the needed REServations for all long-dist trains (and ditto for getting the contramarca for cercanias) and pay extra too- mostly 10 eur/trip. This if often very time-consuming and often leads to ''full'' being told to you in main season.
Also note that Espana has an excellent and much cheaper long-dist BUS network -ALSA is the main operator and also does passes and there are many low-cost flites between the major centres too.

thanks your response.
so i understand that i will be more flexible with a renfe pass or alsa pass.
i am thinking about a 9 days northern spain tour. something like: barcelona, zaragoza, pamplona, san sebastian.
considering these cities are not far away from each other i believe this alsa pass would not be a bad idea.
any other cites/villages/sceneries you can recommend in this area?
thanks
