Hi I am new to this Eurail pass thing and all of this has researching has really got me a headache. I wish to purchase a 4 country Eurail Select pass as I will be doing travel from Switzerland > Italy > Austria > Germany. I will be traveling from Zurich to Rome on Friday, April 18th, RIGHT BEFORE EASTER WEEKEND. I don't want to chance me not getting on a train because that would be a disaster as I have to meet my girlfriend in Rome (flying in from London).
SO if I had a Eurail pass, do I have to buy the Zurich > Rome ticket now from SBB and then show them and get refunded at the station? How does it actually work? Someone please help me out because the Eurail Pass is a good deal but I just dont understand how it works!
Thanks again
Peter

Hi.
The Eurail Pass is your ticket. No additional ticket required.
Read here for details: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/first-time-eurail
On the route Zurich to Rome, you will need an additional reservation (you can do it as well without reservation, but it is slower then).
Travel for example by EC train from Zurich to Milan.
And then by high speed train to Rome.
Example:
Zürich HB dep: 0909
Milano Centrale arr: 1250
Milano Centrale dep: 1315
Roma Termini arr 1624
It is not bad to have a longer break in Milano, as the EC from Switzerland is sometimes in delay and you would lose your reservation then for the high-speed-train to Roma.
Example later departure in Milano:
Milano Centrale dep: 1400
Roma Termini arr 1655
Important: you have to buy TWO reservations. It is not possible to make only one reservation for the whole route. Reservations available in the railcc shop ([ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux]) - buy the reservation together with your Eurail pass (also available in the railcc shop - thank you for supporting our work with your purchase), to save shipping fees.
Optional buy the reservations via these two links:
- EC Switzerland-Italy: https://rail.cc/en/eurail-train-reservation/eurocity-it/sbb-ec/65
- High-speed in Italy: https://rail.cc/en/eurail-train-reservation/frecciabianca/trenitalia-fb/48
Have a nice trip, Peter :)
P.S.: if you want to see the Alps on an amazing route, free of reservation fees, have a look here: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
