Hello.
I'm planning on interrailing it in July. I'm not sure to what degree I should plan in terms of booking hostels etc.
I want to be safe but don't really want to be too tied down to a schedule. Am happy to camp.
Any advice?

Hi there,
Depends on where you are going but July is the very busy season and I always have the popular destinations booked in advance. It is better than turning up somewhere and having to find a bed. Booking also means that you can cancel and rearrange accommodation and lose only a small deposit. Camping is not available everywhere whereas with hostels you will often be right in centre of town. Google Earth will show you exactly where the hostel is and if it's near railway station or beach etc. Hope this is useful. Have a great one.

How far in advance would one generally need to book?
Could we, for example, ring a day or two in advance once we know we're heading in a certain direction?

Hi,
I'd say do it as early as you can to avoid disappointment. When you are on the move, don't bother with costly and difficult phone calls; I advise getting on the net - many hostels have it and often it's free. Looking at hostel booking sites, you'll find all the availabilities and the prices and locations, with maps and directions, right there. And pay your deposit by credit card. It takes a lot of unnecessary hassle out of Interrailing. Hope this is helpful.

Unfortunately I do not have access to a credit card anyway! Only a debit card.

Hi there,
I think that might work. Have a look at Hostel booking sites and their payment pages and see which cards are accepted. [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] takes at least one debit card - Switch, I think - and also have a look at HI International which is a hostelling service throughout Europe. They are usually cleaner and sometimes cheaper than independents. All the best.
