Hi,
I'm currently planning an interrailing trip (July 2014) and one of the journeys I'd like to make is from Amsterdam to Interlaken in Switzerland, preferably overnight.

I used [ux]https://plan.rail.cc[/ux] and bahn.de, but found that the only way to get to these two destinations would be Amsterdam-Basel(overnight)-Lucerne-Interlaken.

This seems a little lengthy, though by no means impossible, and I wondered if anyone had any experience with this journey, or could recommend the best way to get into Interlaken by train.

Thanks in advance!
Rory

Hi Rory!

We cannot include all routes and connections on railcc: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

To look for specific connections it is usually best to use an online schedule planner (plus ask here in case something is unclear; the online schedule planners do not know all the tricks... ;) ): :arr: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Amsterdam - Interlaken overnight is pretty easy:
CNL Amsterdam - Basel: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/amsterdam-zurich-cnl40419/16
IC Basel - Interlaken

Amsterdam Centraal 2031 - 0647 Basel SBB
Basel SBB 0659 - 0857 Interlaken Ost

If you want to sleep longer, you can also stay on the night train until Zürich, then travel back to Interlaken like this:

Amsterdam 2031 - 0834 Zürich HB
Zürich HB 0902 - 0958 Bern
Bern 1004 - 1057 Interlaken Ost

You can also travel Amsterdam - night train to Zürich - Luzern and via Brünig Line (which is rather scenic) to Interlaken, however this would take longest.

If you dont want to spend money on the reservation for the CNL night train and are fine with a regular seat for overnight travel you could also travel like this without having to get a reservation:

Amsterdam Centraal 1834 - 2032 Duisburg
Duisburg 2257 - 0647 Basel SBB :arr: regular 2nd class coaches attached to the CNL from Amsterdam to Zürich: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/duisburg-basel-ic-61419/313
Basel SBB 0659 - 0857 Interlaken Ost

I hoped that helped - it'd be great if you would support us by purchasing your InterRail ticket in our online shop at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/nsinternational[/ux] - thank you. :)

Thats fantastic, thanks very much for your help! I think Amsterdam-Basel-Interlaken seems like the best route for our journey.

We'll be sure to buy our tickets from you!

You're welcome - and thanks for supporting! :)

Reading your other post it looks like you are planning to stay a few days in the Jungfrau area? Do you have any specific plans on where to go already?
Keep in mind that the InterRail ticket does not cover the railways in the Jungfrau area - you can only get as far as Interlaken with the pass, from there you would have to pay full fare.

You might also look into travelling along Lake Brienz to Meiringen (this is the Brünig Route to Luzern); from Meiringen you could go to Aare Gorge with MIB (Meiringen Innertkirchen Bahn; not included in InterRail but since the line is just a few kilometres long a ticket would not be expensive).

We were considering wild-camping just outside Interlaken, perhaps along one of the hiking routes. Is it better to go further into the valleys to somewhere like Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald? We could cover the extra fares with the money we'd save on accommodation and going out.
