thanks!

does it mean that there is no actual train connection between sofia and thessaloniki? and do you know if the connection by bus is already paid by the interrail ticket?
Hi,
i could also buy the europa-spezial ticket from germany to zagreb and enter an 48 hours stop-over in ljubljana, so I would save 1 day of the interrail ticket.
Hi,

DB EuropaSpezial is also possible to Tovarnik (last stop before the serbian border, usally same price as Zagreb), outside germany you can use EuropaSpezial-Tickets in any train for 15 days after the first day of validity!
do you think the interrail ticket will even pay off or will I pay less money by buying the tickets locally (the ticket prices in southeastern european countries seem to be quite cheap)?
If you use the EuropaSpezial, usually tickets bought locally are chaper, maybe the Balkan Flexi Pass is interesting for you?
and: is there no train connection between sarajevo and beograde? ...I'm starting to notice why nobody wants to ride by train - because it's so much more complicated compared to the flights.
There is no direct train - if you want to go by train, you have to ride via Zagreb and spend a night there. Otherwise you can go by Bus (see https://rail.cc/en/train/sarajevo-to-belgrade
).

Hi.
The bus Sofia-Thessalonik is not included in Interrail. Read here for prices: https://rail.cc/en/plovdiv/bus/c
Mmmmh ... airports are outside of cities, not in the city centers like railway stations. And rail travel is a completely different way of travel than to use a plane - beside the ecological aspects. As long as the politics support the flight industry more than the rail development, it is like it is.
No worries - it is not complicate to travel by train or bus in Eastern Europe: just go to the station, buy a cheap ticket, enter the bus or train - much easier than to check in a plane. :)

Hi!

For this trip it will be cheaper to go with regular tickets bought directly at the station in the cities you are going to visit. No need to get an IR ticket.

Anyway, you might think about changing the route a little to not have to go back to Zagreb from Split:

Split - bus to Dubrovnik - bus to Montenegro (Kotor is really nice); then train to Belgrade (from Bar or Podgorica, depending in where you would stay in the country) and then continuing as planned.
