Hi! We are looking to travel on the Ljubljana -> Belgrade train during the day (8am to 5pm or something) and then get the night train from Belgrade to Skopje. However, im worried about the reliability of the connections as well as the length of this journey so are there any places that you could recommend staying a night in between Ljubljana and Belgrade? We felt Zagreb was too close to Ljubljana and we will be visiting Belgrade properly on the way back north from Macedonia as Belgrade seems to be the only connecting city via train to Skopje!

Many thanks,
Matthew

Hi Matthew!

Why are you worried about the reliability? OK, you can expect a certain delay when getting into Belgrade but you can expect that on many lines on the Balkans. The connection into the night train to Skopje normally wont be affected as there is plenty of time to change trains.
Also, the train to Belgrade ususally carries a Serbian restaurant car which you should not miss for its unique atmosphere. :)

Anyway if you wanna stop somewhere, Zagreb would be the obvious choice; Slavonski Brod and Vinkovci are larger cities along the line to Belgrade maybe worth a visit but more interesting would be Osijekt probably, however it is not on the main line to Belgrade.
