Hi although widely travelled, this is my first l project to take my teenage boys across Europe exclusively by rail next summer. All suggestions welcome and I will read through your archives. But my first question is how much in advance should we be booking for travel commencing in June. We will be seven in total (two families).

Hello,
normally you can make reservations 3 month ahead (90-92 days). The same counts for the Interrail and regular tickets. Depending on your destinations and the time you'd like to travel, it might be cheaper to buy group ticket's instead of the Interrail ticket.
To give a more accurate answer it would be helpful to know which destination you'd like to visit and what kind of trains you'd like to take. In our connection list, we also provide connections without reservations, but sometimes you have to take trains that require reservation. Concerning time it's sometimes more efficient to use a train with reservation.
I think you would stick together in the train so I would recommend to make your reservation as soon as possible, e.g. for night trains or routes where the railway companies recommend to make a reservation.
Mostly the railway companies offer special prices for early bookers. If you use interrail you can't use the ticket in your home country, so you have to pay for the tickets or use another means of transport. The tickets to leave or re-enter Great Britain I would buy in advance, if you'd like to go by train.

Thanks NatureOne. We are finilising our plans by middle/end of December, so we should be in good time for reservations for June travel. Still working out dates/destinations/and sequence of travel but it will include (alphabetically) Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest, Hamburg, Lubeck, Milan, Prague, Venice, Vienna, Zagreb.
