Hi

We have already been to Prague so we don't want to travel to Budapest via Prague. I had a look at overnight trains direct and they don't depart later than 1900. Can you suggest any other faster or alternative routes or cities to stop through?

The only other one we can think of is Krakow but it seems further out.

Cheers.

Hej!

If you want to use only one travel day and include an overnight train, you could only go to Munich overnight https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/berlin-munich-cnl1247/28 and then spend the day either in Munich, Salzburg or Vienna before heading to Budapest in the evening.
There are direct Railjet trains connecting these cities about every two hours throughout the day, no reservation needed: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/munich-to-budapest

Another option using two travel days could be to go to Dresden in the morning, then take the overnight train to Budapest in the evening - or take the overnight train to Vienna instead, spend the day there and head to Budapest in the evening.

Going to Krakow would be possible as well, however the train connection currently is quite awkward and you might instead use the IC Bus of Deutsche Bahn that is available to InterRail ticket holders as well but requires a 4€ reservation.

Hi.
Yes, a reservation is required. Have a look here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/berlin-munich-cnl1247/28
Read bellow the map.

You might give break in Bratislava, but again you should pass from Prague :)

It is not a big city, but you can drink couple beers and see around the castle ;)
