Hello,
For our family holiday (trying to be environmentally friendly) we would like to take the Eurostar to Paris, TGV to Strasbourg, then a sleeper to Vienna, and finally to Sofia with a stop in Budapest. I have found all the times for travel quite easily but am stooped by the supplements and extra charges. I know you hav tp pay the Eurostar (£59) and then a few supplements such as €22 on the way to Vienna but can not find any others. Would anyone be able to help me ?
Thank you,
Ben

Hi,
I commend you on the environmentally friendly approach. On extra charges you will need to pay reservation costs, of just a few Euros per person, for most trains. You will be cheaper with couchettes rather than sleeper on the way to Vienna. Couchette cost, in Western Europe, around 17 pounds per person while sleepers will cost more than double. Generally, the rule of thumb is, the slower the train the cheaper the price. Although sometimes it is not possible to find slower/cheaper trains, timetables, such as Thomas Cook's European Rail Timetable - available in your library - will help you to pick the more economical trains where possible. Hope this is helpful. Have a great trip.

Hello!
I'm from Bulgaria and I'm planning to make the same trip from Sofia to London :) . I've found a table where it's shown that 2nd class sleeper from Sofia to Vienna costs 50 lv. = 25 eur. (I think it's too much). Between Sofia and Belgrad there are couchettes - 9.78 lv. and sleeper - 15.65 lv.
I have never travelled in Western Europe and I don't know which route to choose. Do you know if there could be significant difference in price depending on the route?
Thank you,
Pavel :)

This is very interesting information as we will be travelling from Sofia to London later this summer. Do you know how much it would be to reserve just a seat from Sofia to Belgrade, and then get a couchette Belgrade - Vienna.
To answer your question, elsewhere in Europe things will be more expensive in general, €20-30 for a couchette, and a few € reservation fee. Some fast trains are much more expensive (Thalys €15) and are detailed on the suppliments section of this site

From Sofia to Belgrad or Vienna you pay 2.44 lv. for a seat. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about couchettes or sleepers from Belgrad to Vienna.
I wish you a very nice time in Bulgaria :) and if you want to know something else, ask me!
