You can travel for free. There are faster connections (~ 5:30h) using an IC train - I recommend a reservation for the IC trains for EUR 3. Either buy it at a ticket machine in Italy or at Trenitalia. Select the option Global Pass.
But this connection is free of reservations:

I am unable to put NICE as a destination on Trenitalia website?

I have made a couple of reservations on the website already but used the wrong surname for my partner. Will she have any problems if we don't get them changed?

We had planned to go straight from Montpellier to Barcelona - would it be difficult to fit the Little Yellow Train In?

Hi Jonathan.
Nice is in France. You can't make a reservation on the Italian national railway website for Nice. Also like written above there are free local trains from Ventimiglia to Nice.
About the wrong name, contact the company where you got it from. But if only hte pre-name is spelled wrong, I don't thing there will be problems.
The Little Yellow Train is on this route:

[u]https://rail.cc/en/train/latour-de-carol-to-villefranche-de-conflent[/u]
So either travel Montpellier - Perpignan - Little Yellow Train - Barcelona
or: Montpellier - Latour de Carol - Little Yellow Train - Perpignan - Barcelona

I am struggling to see how we could make it from Montpellier - perpignan - little yellow train - barcelona all in 1 day? I have run through a lots of options but the connection train times do not seem to work out?

It would be the 30th October. I just cant work the connection timings out. It seems that there are some big gaps when you arrive at Villefranche-de-Conflent :|

Use the Bookmark topic at the bottom of this page to be notified. Check your spam folder if the mails arrive there.

For the 30.10.2013 the schedules are not known for now concerning the part up to Latour de Carol. Traffic is limited for now there - but I don't have details.
So just wait a little bit... maybe at the end of August we have it.
Sorry. French railways ... always tricky.
