As above-use the normal trains (about ev 2 hrs|) and NO RES needed-or even possible.
|BTW-on the new style mobile IR passes these detials per train are very clearly shown when you add the trip.

The IR passes are FAR from clearly. One example for the train Nizza to Messina (and a lot of other trains in Europe) it says: “NRT tariff is applicable for the given service (Non Reservation Ticket)” and there below “no reservation”.
NRT means “Non-INTEGRATED Reservation Ticket”, usually expressed by normal people (e.g. people not working at the Interrail-app department) as “reservation only”.
So it says here that a “reservation only” is possible AND there is no reservation possible????
Again, this train is only an example for a lot of other trains elswhere in Europe.

The NRT Tarif is completely irrelevant to Interrail/Eurail Passes - in theory so is the alternative IRT system but mention of that could hint at reservation fees that have variable rates and often quite high. NRT is the old system where there was a price table and the fare could be read (or calculated) from a book that was issued for the whole year - there was no "demand management" constantly varying fares on the same train, no quotas and no fixed trains and since there were no integrated reservations it was possible to sell too many tickets. This is the same system still used on many regional trains where zone pricing isn't used. SCIC-NRT is a cross border combination of the NRTs of more than one country. NRT doesn't mean that reservations are available or compulsory, it just means they aren't included. For a long time DB had compulsory reservations (and supplements) with NRT on IC and ICE but that ended over a decade ago. The Italians still have them on IC and even some regional trains but Frecce trains have IRT fares. SNCF extended IRT from TGV to many of the surviving IC trains.
To this confusion we add the staff of Interrail who write instructions in various languages whilst not being fluent in any of them! Always a good idea to read the same info in a variety of languages and see if it means the same in all of them. "Reservation only" could mean complusory but could also mean you can get a reservation on it's own if you already have a pass. Or something else, sometimes I see things on that website and have no idea what it means!
IRT is basically what SNCF introduced with the TGVs 40 years ago, know also known by the equally meaningless phrases "Global ticket" or "Global Pricing" which mean there is no fixed price, it varies with demand on each train and you buy a ticket WITH a fixed reservation on a specific train (possibly with flexible connections). This means that if you have a pass they have to make up a price for the reservation which would have been part of the fare - and that price may be variable and subject to quota just like the fare.
